Costa Rica Beaches

Beach! Just the word makes you think of sun, sand and relaxation. Costa Rica beaches have that and so much more.

Costa Rica is almost entirely coastline. Many cities are on the beach or within a short distance. You can't help but experience the easy-going, laidback atmosphere found at the beachfront shops and restaurants. Costa Rica's climate is too hot and humid to do anything but sit back and enjoy the ocean breeze moving in off the water.

Caribbean Beaches

Cahuita National Park-Cahuita Point
As you walk through the park along sandy trails towards the beach you can hear the call of howler monkeys and watch the other wildlife enfold you in their world. Cahuita Point has a multitude of activities including snorkeling along the reef or taking a glass bottom boat tour. The reef boasts a wide array of sea life including elk antlers coral, brain coral, sea fans, sponges, sea urchins, and lobsters. More than 100 species of fish, including globe, angel, porcupine and parrotfish call the reef their home. A sunken slave trader that wrecked during the second half of the 18th century promises exciting adventure.

Puerto Viejo Community
If you travel about 15 miles south of Cahuita you reach Puerto Viejo. You'll find the most activity in the Talamanca region here. Be ready to come across some good restaurants, pizza parlors, beachfront bars and discos. Conversations tend towards rhythmic Jamaican English mixed with lots of Spanish words. The beach on the northern edge of town has sand as black as onyx and fine as confection sugar. Enjoy a multitude of activities on the beach such as swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing and surfing.

A few miles south of Punta Uva is the fishing village of Manzanillo and the Manzanillo-Gandoca Wildlife Refuge are located south of Punta Uva. The refuge houses multiple ecosystems of swamps, a forest and coral reefs. Four species of sea turtles lay their eggs here. The coral reefs are home to colored fish and sea creatures with vibrant birds living in the forest and swamps. Along the beach, azure water merges with the luminescent sand.

Central Pacific Beaches

Playa Tambor
Located on the Nicoya Peninsula, you'll find a peaceful sanctuary with unspoiled beaches and forest preserves. This is a beach paradise home to a first class resort and numerous activities. It is more difficult to get to than other beach areas but well worth the effort. Wide ranges of activities are available at or near the beach. You can eat in gourmet restaurants, play golf at an eight-hole course, and ride horses, sail, snorkel, wind surf, deep-sea fish, or just lie in a hammock listening to the ocean waves.

One of the most visited beach areas in Costa Rica is Manuel Antonio/Quepos area, southwest of San Jose. It is home to magnificent wildlife in the Manuel Antonio National Park. Three beautiful palm lined beaches within its borders contain no commercialism and have dazzling sunsets. Deep sea fishing, hiking, kayaking and white water rafting are just a few of the activities available along with swimming, snorkeling or surfing in the park or on public beaches along the coast from Manuel Antonio to Quepos.

Northern Pacific

Guanacaste province in northwest Costa Rica offers miles of stunning beaches. The main highways that serve the area are paved but the coast roads become gravel or dirt. This makes traveling from beach to beach more daunting than it looks by map so picking one beach to visit is your best bet then enjoy. The beach areas of the province offer an abundance of activities.
