Limón Costa Rica
Limón remains the leading port of Costa Rica to the Carribean Sea. Its importance was originally due to the construction of the railroad to San Jose in the 1800's. The railroad boosted the country's banana export and overall economy. By the time it was shut down Limón was established as the leading export for the banana industry. Limón's port has been a stopping point for several American military ships Limón is currently the capital of the province of Costa Rica that carries its name. Its population has climbed to 90,000+ including surrounding smaller cities. It houses most of Cost Rica's Afro-American population that was brought in to work on the railway line in the late nineteenth century. In the 1960's plans were made to like a series of naturally occurring lagoons and river courses. The Canales de Tortuguero created by a dredging operation permitted inland navigation between the city of Limón and the northeastern coastal villages. Tours are available to travel along this amazing waterway. Due to its location on the Carribean coast, there are a multitude of water activities available in Limón. Activities range from ocean kayaking to swimming with dolphins. Within the rain forest region you can enjoy naturalist tours and see various wildlife like sloth's, monkeys, iguanas, caymans, aquatic birds, turtles, etc. Whether you travel by land, by sea or by air, Limón, Costa Rica has an amazing atmosphere and a whole host of activities for every traveler.
