It boasts sandy beaches, a laidback atmosphere, and marked Caribbean lifestyle. Puerto Viejo is a tiny community nestled in a majestic valley surrounded by lush rainforest. It's located 82 km north of San Jose on the Caribbean coast.
Banks Two banks are available for money exchange. Banco Nacianal located at the intersection of the main road and the road to the port. Banco Popular located north of the soccer field. Both have a 24-hour ATM. Medical The hospital is accessible south of the soccer field on the left and a pharmacy is located 100m past the taxi stand. In case of emergencies always call 911. Police The police station is located next to the supermarket. Again, in case of emergency call 911. Post Office The post office is across the street from Banco Nacianal at the turnoff to the port. Transportation A schedule is posted at the bus station opposite the southwest corner of the soccer field. It is required that you purchase tickets before boarding and a schedule is located next to the ticket counter. Buses go to San Carlos, direct to San José, San Jose via Vara Blanca, San José via Heredia, San José via El Tunel Zurquí and Guápiles. Lodging Just outside you'll find upscale nature lodges that put you right "in the middle of it all". Although, the town proper provides a number of economic options including hotels, bed and breakfasts, and cabins. Food Along the main street you will find a multitude of sodas and locales with fresh baked goods. Places of Interest Probably the greatest lure is the various places of interest located near the town. The Snake Garden is one of the more stunning attractions located outside of Puerto Viejo going towards La Virgen. Lush rainforest parks include EstaciÓn Biológica la Selva and Centro Neotrópico Sarapiquis. River tours are available along the Río Sarapiquí and Río San Juan.

The small community stretches about 300m along the main street.
A soccer field bordering the street marks the town center. It hosts
a Super Sarapiquí supermarket and bus station. If you branch of the
main road you'll find several hostels and the port along the Rio
Sarapiquí.
