Is Costa Rica A Safe Place?
Costa
Rica is among the safest places in the world. It is a democratic
republic with a stable economy. But, as with any foreign trip, you
should take basic safety precautions.
Should
I Register With The Embassy?
All travelers to
Costa Rica should register with the Embassy in case you have an
emergency at home or in Costa Rica. For more information on
registering with the embassy,
contact your local consulate.
How
Long Can I Stay In Costa Rica?
Tourist
visas for Costa Rica expire after 90 days. Should you wish to extend
your stay longer, it is easiest to do so by crossing the border for
24 hours and then re-entering the country.
How
Much Money Should I Bring?
Costa Rica can be extremely cheap or extremely expensive depending
on your budget and tastes. For approximately $5 (US) you can sleep
in a hammock by the beach or you can get a nice room for $60 on up.
We recommend planning your itinerary ahead of time so you can budget
accordingly.

Can I
Drink The Water?
The
water here is perfectly safe. Costa Rica has the highest sanitation
standards in Central & South America.
I
Don't Speak Spanish. Is That A Problem?
If you spoke
Spanish your trip would certainly be easier. None the less, Costa
Rica's premier business is Tourism and thus the country is very
sensitive to language barriers. It wouldn't hurt to learn a few
basic phrases (i.e., "Where's the bathroom?"). Should
I Rent A Car?
Renting a vehicle is typically not
recommended. Transportation in Costa Rica is very cheap by U.S.
standards and the deposit for rentals is very steep. This coupled
with poor road conditions makes public transportation the ideal
choice. Click
here for a detailed description of all the transport options on
getting here and getting around. Do
I Need A Passport?
Often, other documents are accepted for entrance & exit.
However, the acceptance of such documents varies and using them is
risky. You are highly advised to bring a passport.
